Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, which lies approx. 35 kilometers southeast of Krakow, possesses a Bernardine monastery, founded in the early seventeenth century by the Krakow Wojewode Mikolaj Zebrzydowski. The shrine to the Virgin Mary in Baroque church has attracted many pilgrims, amongst them Pope John Paul II. Located southeast of the monastery on picturesque hills and in small valleys lies a Mount Calvary, consisting of the small churches and the small and tiny chapels of the Stations of the Cross and the Passion of Mary. Well-known passion plays take place here during Holy Weeks, as well as celebrations on the Stations of the Life of Mary around 15 August, Assumption Day.
