The town of Wieliczka lies about 12 kilometers east of Krakow on the road to Tarnow. Situated here is one of the oldest salt mines, which was in extensive use from thirteenth century on. The underground passages are over 150 kilometers long. The mine in Wieliczka formerly brought in substantial returns and the power of Polish kings mainly rested on this “salty treasure”, which was also responsible for Krakow’s development. Part of the now exhausted mine and also unique Salt Mining Museum are now open to visitors, who are fascinated by the mysterious world of salt chapels, chambers, tunnels, salt lakes and figures sculpted out of salt, by the subterranean Chapel of the Blessed Kinga and also by the ancient mining installations, which bear testimony to the high standard of the mine. The museum part illustrates the history of mining in Wieliczka Salt Mine; on display are items such as miners’ clothing and equipment, documents, privileges and plans of the mine. As the micro-climate of the mine has a therapeutic effect, a sanatorium for illness of the respiratory tract as well as for certain allergies has been established here. In 1978 the UNESCO included the Wileiczka Salt Mine in its list of the world’s cultural heritage.
